Description
Perhaps the most legitimate and honorable expression of race is to show the beauty of shared
humanity, highlighting moments of unity and common purpose, despite differences.
Unfortunately, history shows us that race can easily become an arbitrary lever for power – either via
greed or fear – resulting in subjugation or separation. However, the blood underneath our skin is the same color and is never shed without a desire for something good or better, whether willingly in hope or unwillingly in suffering. This suggests that we all have a shared hope and desire for goodness, regardless of the color of our skin. This shared hope and desire for goodness dwell at the heart of our essence and
being.
Regardless of how we look, we all have the ability to experience the same spectrum of happiness and
suffering. Peoples’ stories, backgrounds, traits, and contributions are together representations of our
shared humanity, both individually and collectively. No matter our appearance or color of skin, because
of our essence – our soul – we all have intrinsic and infinite value and dignity. Honoring ourselves
individually, therefore, demands humility, respect, and honor towards one another. After all, the human
story as represented by the need for dignity, acceptance, and meaning applies to everyone regardless of outside appearance. Because we are all the face of the human race, we must recognize this to advance kindness and goodness for each other and all those who are to come.
