Description
Sign #6 is a tribute to those who have counted the cost and committed their lives, vocation, and
energies to protecting and preserving the rights and wellbeing of others. The people who have made
this commitment have willingly acknowledged the possibility of being put in harm’s way. For some, it
may eventually require the sacrifice of one’s own life for the sake of another’s. They put themselves on
the line to preserve the wellbeing of others, as substitutes in the face of potential danger.
Willingly subjecting oneself to regular potential harm in defense of others, and counting such costs as
worthwhile, is among the most meaningful and purposeful acts of love one can commit themselves to. For people in these kinds of positions, their power does not come from their might, force, or strength, but from their courage and selflessness. This kind of selfless commitment is worthy of our honor and inspires the rest of us to selfless acts of service toward others in our own sphere of influence. While our own inspired acts might not require the giving of our physical lives, they are no less motivated by the same bright and powerful force.
Focusing our individual will for the wellbeing of someone else (a spouse, sibling, aging parent, son or daughter, friend, neighbor, etc.) is the essence of selfless love. The potential cost might be less when compared to that of a member of the military or law enforcement, or a first responder, but the impact is motivated by the same virtue of goodness and sacrificial love for others
In other words, the virtues within all of our acts of goodwill for each other share their origins and
meaning in the actions of those who are willing to pay it all in selfless acts of personal sacrifice.
So to all those who are willing to pay the ultimate price for the wellbeing and defense of others, thank
you for your example and inspiration. For those who have fallen, by their willingness to pay the ultimate
price, we can be sure that if given a second life they would have the courage to make the same sacrifice
for us again. For the sake of honor and the same love that motivated their sacrifice, it is up to us to live
these “second lives” by selfless service and love towards one another.
